I use modern high quality, high resolution Nikon digital Mirrorless and DSLR cameras. Our image quality is further enhanced by the use of quality, fast Nikon lenses incorporating a wide range of focal lengths including fixed focal lengths and zoom lenses from fish-eye to long telephoto lenses. The quality, robustness, and reliability of my Nikon cameras, lenses and accessories in conjunction with my familiarity over time with the system have always given me confidence when working with clients or on my personal assignments and projects. Ultimately though, the ergonomics, menu system, the great dynamic range and, in particular, the quality and the 'Look' of the files produced is much to my liking and, that of my clients.
Photography is all about the photographer, their vision, their skill with their chosen tools to see and use the 'light' in order to craft an image that resounds, in some way, within the viewer and reflects the 'mind’s eye' of the photographer and, the needs of the client. Creating that visual and emotional impact is in essence the art of photography.
Whilst it is accepted that the brand, the expense and the extent of your photographic arsenal 'doth not make the photographer' or create the vision needed to capture that moment in the light, it is clear that high end cameras, the quality of their sensors and the lenses or 'glass' attached does, undoubtedly, facilitate the delivery of both the vision and the base, image quality. Photographic equipment is merely the tool of the artist and simply, but beautifully, facilitates the creation of that image.
Having said all this, the forums abound in endless discussion and 'keeping up with the Jones' to the point that sometimes the intended purpose of the equipment, 'making photographs', becomes almost a distraction. However, this energetic and, at times, passionate obsession and discussion by so many, around the equipment, is in fact part of the driving force that propels the R&D of the major camera manufacturers. This has got to be good for us all in our collective efforts to improve image quality and the functionality of our tools.
Finally, these days most of the major manufacturers produce high end, quality tools and differences are often down to simply a matter of current investment in a brand, use case, personal preference and, perhaps, some brand loyalty. The key or starting point is building a usable collection of quality lenses and quality sensors in camera bodies that are ergonomically friendly, functional, robust and add to our joy in taking pictures.
So be it then! Let the passion flow and the ‘drawing with light’ begin.
Note: Currently as of 18th May, 2023 I am in the process of moving from DSLR to Mirrorless system and will be selling many of my Nikon F mount lenses and DSLR cameras and DSLR accessories to fund the expansion of my Nikon Mirrorless lens collection. If you are interested in purchasing any of the equipment I have listed, please don't hesitate to contact me by email.
